Welcome!

The Metropolitan Democratic Club (MDC) was established in Seattle in the early 1950s as a visible and vocal alternative to the mainstream Party apparatus. Our founding members were progressive downtown professionals committed to protecting our basic freedoms by taking the lead in the fight against McCarthyism.

For over half a century, the MDC has maintained its unique character as an independent, loosely organized group of present, past and prospective officeholders, government groupies and curious citizens. We have no loyalty oaths and no litmus tests.

Although it operates outside of the official Party structure, the MDC is still very much a part of the Democratic Party tradition, and many of our members are grassroots activists and Party leaders.

By providing an informal, open forum for speakers and facilitating the free exchange of ideas, MDC members help to guide and advise Party officials, influence elected and appointed decision-makers on matters of policy, and inform our members and the general public about important issues.

Our mission: the MDC promotes debate of important public issues and works for the Democratic principles of political reform, open government, protection of the environment, corporate responsibility, fair taxes, health care for all, civil rights, civil liberties, labor rights, educational excellence, the rule of law at home and abroad, and the welfare and peace of the world.

We support candidates for public office who share our mission.

MDC holds endorsement meetings on candidates and ballot measures prior to local elections. These meetings are heavily attended by members and candidates, and all members vote on endorsements.

We also host other social events for members during the year that combine nourishment with networking and political discussion. These include issue forums, our Annual Meeting/Summer Social and our Winter Holiday Party.
